When is a writer like a sculptor?

Posted in General with tags , , , on March 16, 2017 by Kate Jack

The answer is that every time a writer puts pen to paper, or fingers to a keyboard, they are sculpting worlds and characters. Each time a story is moulded together, its creator is sharing their vision, displaying it to the world like a fine piece of art.

And writers are artists, but instead of marble or paint their tools are words, used to create images in a reader’s head, sparking the imagination into life and filling the brain with strange, faraway places.

From the very first word written, until the end is reached, a writer endeavours to entice, to create emotions of love, hate, fear, and above all, draw the reader in. To imbue their words with life is an author’s aim and offers a special diversion to those who seek new horizons.

How can books change your life?

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , , , on June 29, 2013 by Kate Jack

Believe it or not, there’re some people who consider reading to be dull, a waste of time, pointless. Why? Probably due to a number of reasons. Apart from those who suffer from Dyslexia, and therefore find reading difficult, there are others who perhaps haven’t been exposed to the right kind of books and have been forced to read material they’ve found unpalatable. This has resulted in their avoiding all books and only reading when absolutely necessary for their day to day needs. It’s a huge shame, since reading can open portals to worlds unexplored and provide the chance to meet amazing characters. It enables us to sail away, beyond the limitations imposed on us by society as a whole.

I remember being taught French at school. The teacher was so dry that it put me right off learning any foreign languages at all. The British are already a little insular in this regard as the English language is widely spoken all over the world, so why make the effort? The answer is, we’re missing out. As in reading, speaking another tongue broadens one’s horizons to an amazing degree. It opens up new vistas and supplies the mind with amazing opportunities to explore strange places, fight dragons and experience a freedom unavailable elsewhere.

Books are a wonderful, fantastic medium. They open doors and tantalize us with endless possibilities. All we have to do is turn the page.

Dear diary…what will 2013 bring?

Posted in General with tags , , on January 1, 2013 by Kate Jack

diary 4

One has to speculate to accumulate, so they say. So I’m speculating on what the New Year will bring to me as a writer. Success? I hope so and if it doesn’t, it won’t be for want of trying. Even if it doesn’t, I shall continue to write for as long as I can use a keyboard, hold a pen, and come up with new ideas, characters and scenarios.

Time marches ever onwards and we must march with it, or be left behind in whatever walk of life we find ourselves. Procrastination must be swept aside and every opportunity seized and utilised. If we fail to seize the day, then we fail ourselves. Nothing is impossible, everything is attainable if we but reach out and grab it.

So here’s to new chances, fresh ideas and new horizons reached.
