The freedom to write!

Posted in General with tags , , , on April 8, 2017 by Kate Jack

Most authors don’t earn enough from their writing to survive without going to work. This can have a detrimental effect, in that sometimes there’s a lack of energy and motivation to indulge in the creative process. It’s also very difficult to get in the right mindset too, when for most of the day dull routine saps the imagination and the writer finds themselves bogged down, their wits and imagination stuck at rock bottom.

This is a rut in which I’ve been stuck for a long, long time. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as I’m now taking early retirement. I will have the time, the energy, and hopefully, the inspiration to at last begin writing seriously again. I can’t wait to free my brain from the excruciating miasma of paid employment. Of having the use of the majority of my time dictated by my, soon to be, ex employers. I can’t wait to walk the streets of my imagination and bring to life new characters, new worlds and new stories – I can’t think of anything better. 🙂

Time to put things “Write”

Fiction-Fantasy-Writing-Prompts

What with one thing and another, 2016 was not a good year for me. For a start I’ve done practically no writing at all, apart from the odd blog post and a few apathetic attempts to work on my current wip, book one of The Songstress Trilogy.  The only reasons I can give for this lack of productivity are a scarcity of energy, due to problems at work. They’re making cut backs and have reallocated so many tasks from my department, that we sit around watching the fingers on the clock drag themselves around at a pace that makes a snail look speedy. Boredom, as you know, can sap the life out of a person and make them disinclined to do anything of much; at least that’s the case with me.

Then I had health issues. I suffer from type 2 diabetes and somehow managed to get a diabetic ulcer on the underside of my left big toe. This became infected and despite large quantities of super antibiotics, it continued to deteriorate. Subsequently the toe had to be removed, which resulted in being trapped in hospital for four weeks, not the best place to write for two reasons: firstly, they don’t encourage you to bring in expensive items like laptops, as there’s no real security (the lockers don’t lock) and secondly, I always seemed to end up in the bed next to someone who snored like a stegosaurus.

So after four weeks of sleep deprivation, hospital food, and cabin fever, I went home to yet more confinement, as I was not allowed to put any weight on my foot. Was I fed up? Did I succumb to yet  more apathy? You betcha!

Anyway, this tale of woe actually has a happy ending. Why? Because due to the aforementioned cut backs, the opportunity for early retirement  came along and despite my missing toe, I pole vaulted onto the wagon and put my bid for freedom in.

Chain breaking

So yes folks, I’m breaking the chains of my incarceration and heading for the glorious occupation of writing and creating – there’s nothing like it 😀

Lament of the Silver Eyed folk

Posted in General with tags , , , , , on November 5, 2016 by Kate Jack

eye

This is the lament of the silver eyed folk,

a tale of the times when our frail hearts broke.

To travel the lands we could do no more,

it left us longing for the unreachable shore…

…of land long gone into mystery,

taking away our history.

sunrise

Trapped amongst the fume and smoke,

despised and ensnared under the yolk.

city

The music of freedom we are denied,

we are without aim, we are without pride.

flute

Let all who hear this heartfelt song,

pray for our freedom to return where we belong.

The Silver Flute Trilogy

Lyrical

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 19, 2012 by Kate Jack

Soft as mist, light as air,

driving away all strife and care.

Music frees me,

quick and easy.

Keeping fear at bay,

letting me have my say.

Soft as mist, light as air…

Joy…part III

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , on July 11, 2012 by Kate Jack

Oh the joy of leaving work and getting home. “Home”, such a wonderful word.

I open the front door, go upstairs and enter my room. As I do, my cat shoots past me, out onto the landing to roll on her back and hold up her front paws in sheer pleasure at her freedom.

I take off my coat, kick off my shoes, sit down and let out a long sigh of relief. I’ve shut out the world, with its ugly cacophony of noise and pollution, the jangle of people’s conversations, and all the loudness that brings. All is peaceful, I’m cocooned in silence and sweet, sweet solitude.

Oh the joy…

On the outside looking in.

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , , on June 24, 2012 by Kate Jack

Do you ever feel that the whole world is privy to a secret that you’re not? I’ve been having that feeling a lot lately. Paranoia? Probably, but I can’t help feeling I’m on the outside looking in.

Why? Because other people seem to be getting on with their lives, whilst I’m caught in hiatus, waiting for something momentous to happen and try as I might, I can’t seem to break free of the stasis of inertia.

Day after day I resolve to break out, to spread my wings and fly above it all. To push away the enemies of sloth and mediocrity and show my true colours. But what are they? What colours should I show? I try a shade for size, only to discard it for another. I flit from one to another, never settling, never choosing – never anchoring myself and ascertaining my life’s purpose. I suppose most people feel that way at one time or another and in that sense I’m not alone.

Well today I woke up with a sense of purpose – tentative and shy – but it’s there and I’m determined to hang on to it. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. A cliche, true,  but like all cliches it contains an element of truth.
