Are you afraid of success…

Posted in General with tags , , , , on April 5, 2017 by Kate Jack

… as a writer?

I remember when I first got the email from my publisher , saying that they were prepared to publish my Books , a feeling of elation almost overwhelmed me, along with – of all things – emotions of fear and sheer panic!

I suppose it was fear of the unknown and a natural disinclination to draw attention to myself. But on the other hand, I’ve always wanted to be a writer since I was a very young child. The big difference is, though, that most of my childhood stories were for my consumption alone. The thought of taking my ideas and dreams into a public forum was scary!  Making up stories for oneself is very different from sharing them with others: fear of rejection, fear of ridicule, and last, but not least, fear of failure.

Fear of failure can stop people from even trying to achieve their dreams and it’s such a shame. Yes, it can be a tremendous blow when we don’t succeed, but surely it’s better to try than just bury our heads in the sand and never know what would have happened if we’d just tried?

As a writer, I’ve yet to become a roaring success and I almost stalled when I received that email, but I took a deep breath, signed the contract and a few months later, almost wet myself when I saw my first book on Amazon 😀

So, even if I never have another book or story published, I will continue to write, and yes, continue to dream my dreams 🙂

When do you write?

Early morning…

…or late at night?

liverpool at night

Personally I find my thoughts are clearer early in the morning. During the day, when I’m at work, I find my brain tends to slowly turn to cotton wool; by evening, all I want to do is vegetate.

Weirdly, though, it’s when I’m asleep that I get my best ideas. When this happens, I have to force myself awake and make a note of whatever images passed fleetingly through my unconscious self, otherwise, by morning, they’re gone. This leaves me with an annoying sense of loss. I know I had a great idea for a story, but I can’t remember what it was.

At the same time, some of the ideas that seem great when I’m only half awake, seem like the ravings of a lunatic in the cold light of day. A writer’s mind is a complex, and somewhat messy place, filled with half formed stories, articles and other detritus. Having said that, sometimes a jewel emerges from the chaos and becomes a wonderful word picture to share with others. All the turmoil and disorganisation is worth it – right?

Dreams and words.

I can see beyond the sky…

… to where my hopes and dreams still lie.

I can see down below, to where my pain and sorrow go.

I can see what lies behind.

The past is there, it fills my mind.

It’s difficult, isn’t it…

Posted in General with tags , , , , on October 8, 2013 by Kate Jack

…to remain optimistic?

The long, sometimes dark, journey through life can wear you down. Enthusiasm and keeping positive become increasingly hard and the road you travel becomes rocky and steep. But you keep going, what else can you do? Persistence, I suppose, is the key. All one can hope for is that at the end of the trail, your dreams will be realised and come to fruition.

But it can be hard – very hard – to maintain a facade of cheerfulness and determination against the overwhelming realities of the world we live in. The news contains images of war and famine, political upheaval, and is filled with the dissenting voices of those determined to tell people how they should live their lives. The uncaring attitude of those at the top, for those at the bottom of society is enough to make one wonder what the hell’s the point?

But through all the maelstrom of life, one must try to forge ahead, and leave behind those who would hold you back… there’s no other way of reaching and holding your dreams in the palm of your hand.

What’s in a dream?

Posted in General with tags , , , , on October 4, 2013 by Kate Jack

What do your dreams say about you? Well, in my case, that I’m slightly eccentric. Although I’m a rather – ahem – mature lady, I still have a childlike imagination. It’s filled with the music of words, which play and replay endless stories. It’s always been like that, ever since I was a child. Is this a bad thing? No, I don’t think so. For without dreams and aspirations, what are we?

We all need a path to follow, one that will lead us to whatever awaits us, good or bad. In the case of the latter, our dreams will, hopefully, sustain us and give us the strength to prevail against adversity.

I’ve recently been given the means to achieve some of my dreams, albeit in a small way, but the measure of hope it has given me, is immeasurable. It offers a chink of light in what has been a dark and sad time. So thank you Dad, thanks for the opportunity, you’ll never know how happy you’ve made me. I’m sailing high at the moment, all thanks to you 😀
