Determination is the key!

Posted in Writing with tags , , , on July 1, 2017 by Kate Jack

Writers are prone to fits of melancholy and depression, brought about by lack of success and, possibly, too much coffee. This in turn leads to all cessation of writing activities, which takes us back to the above mentioned state of being.

It becomes a vicious circle, from which seemingly there’s no escape.

But there is. It’s not easy, and involves a lot of girding of the loins, but it can be done. And what is this miraculous cure? I hear you ask. Simple: DETERMINATION and lots of it. But here’s the cherry on the cake. Once you’ve made the decision, it becomes easier. Just as I was determined never to smoke another cigarette, it’ll be a year in August, just as I was determined to use the time I have to write my next set of books. The results? I have more money at my disposal, since I packed in the fags, my health has improved, and best of all, I’m writing again on a regular basis.

Remember what the great French Artist, Henri Matisse said:

Food for thought.

Teamwork and Leadership with education symbol represented by two human heads shaped with gears with red and gold brain idea made of cogs representing the concept of intellectual communication through technology exchange.

As writers, we’re used to sharing our thoughts, bouncing ideas off each other, and positing what will, or won’t, make a good story. We’re also used to a great deal of introspection, endeavouring to analyse why we do what we do. This usually happens to me in the wee hours of the morning, when I try to seek out the reasons for my desire to write. Trouble is, I never come up with an answer, no matter how much I search my inner self. There’s no rhyme or reason for what I do and why I do it; all I do know is that I couldn’t stop writing if my life depended on it.

At the moment, I’m sitting in bed, staring out at the dawn sky, drinking coffee, still trying to self-analyse why I want to evolve and grow into my chosen profession, despite all the frustration, heartache and setbacks it entails. The only reply I can come up with is, it’s the first thing I think about when I wake up, and the last thing on my mind when I go to sleep. Driven? You bet, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. 😀

Diary of a writer.

diary 3

Woke up at 5.30am, due to my brother warming up the engine of his motorbike, prior to taking an early morning ride.

Stumbled out of bed, and then fed the cat, getting cat food all over my hands – yeuk!

cat-foodLurched downstairs and dragged the washing machine over to the sink – must get the damn thing plumbed in. Shoved laundry into the machine, added washing liquid and dye catcher, slammed door shut and set programme. Made coffee, attached intravenous drip – just kidding 😀

coffee 2

Slurped coffee, lurched back upstairs to turf the cat off my bed.

Head down on pillow, to catch a bit more sleep. Damn! No chance! Heard brother returning on his extremely noisy bike. 😦 Picked up  Kindle, and continued reading Tricia Drammeh’s: Spellbound (Spell bringers, book I) instead 🙂

What would life be like…

coffee 2

… without coffee?

It’s 8.22 am and I’m lying on my bed, laptop on my knee, having just completed the first edit on my WIP Dawn Horizon. I’ve taken today and tomorrow off work, and including the weekend, that makes 4 whole days to do one last edit and then send it into my publisher.

I’m filled, albeit temporarily, with a sense of well being, aided and abetted by the lovely cup of coffee I’ve just made myself. Long may it last :D.

Even the slamming of car doors, from parents arriving to drop their kids off at the school opposite, cannot disturb my equilibrium. The cat’s licking my arm, making me spill a few drops of my precious coffee, normally a hanging offence, but I remain unperturbed. I’m caught up in that rare and precious feeling of a job well done.

Ahh, bliss. 😀

What do you do to celebrate?

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , on March 3, 2013 by Kate Jack

How do you celebrate, when you’ve achieved something and get that warm glow of satisfaction? Champagne and caviar? Party ’til you drop? Or perhaps form the biggest conga line this side of Brazil?

Not me. Teetering on the edge of old age, as I am, I prefer to sit back, relax with a cup of coffee in one hand, a biscuit in the other and…

…watch Inspector Montalbano!

It’s a double celebration for me, for not only is the writing going well, but my brother just told me that BBC4 is planning to show Young Montalbano, later this year. Oh caloo calay, frabulous joy – I can hardly wait. 😀
