What do you enjoy most…
For me, apart from the actual creative process, it’s when the first draft is done and it’s time to start editing. I absolutely love adding this, deleting that, polishing and shining, until, at least as far as I’m concerned, my work gleams. What could be more satisfactory?
Having said that, the temptation to edit as I write used to be overwhelming. It’s a form of procrastination, going over and over the same chapters, before the work is completed. Better, by far to get the words down, no matter how clunky, no matter how adverb ridden, then edit. A first draft is the means to expanding one’s ideas, to build the framework of your story. It doesn’t have to, or need to be perfect; that’s what editing and rewrites are meant to do, to perfect, as much as possible, the plot, characterisation, narrative and dialogue.
There is a tendency to rush things, to get it done, but as I’ve learned over the years, patience is needed if you want to offer your readership a piece of writing that shouts quality.
So enjoy the editing process, enjoy crafting your work, until it’s the best it can possibly be. 😀
