To buy or not to buy – that is the question.

It’s an old, but true saying, people do judge a book by its cover. If it’s dull, and unattractive, some people will assume the contents are the same. If it’s vibrant and eye catching, the reverse is assumed. That said, the only correct way to judge a book is to read it. The blurb on the back of most books will give the prospective reader an idea of what kind of content to expect. Also, if the first page doesn’t grab you, then that particular piece of work may not be for you, which is where Amazon’s “look inside” facility comes in handy.

But it’s a waste of money if you buy it, only to find you don’t like it, I hear you say. Not quite as true as it might once have been. Most eBooks are dirt cheap, and places like Amazon sell reasonably priced secondhand books, so it’s not as painful to the pocket if you can’t read something you thought was just up your street.

I recently had a review ofΒ Land of Midnight Days posted by someone on Amazon. They didn’t like the story, fair enough, and added that the “dull cover” didn’t help matters, again fair enough; at least they read it. However, I got the impression they skipped large amounts of the narrative in their haste to reach the end, as some of the information about the book was completely wrong. That, coupled with the fact they found the cover “dull”, made me wonder why they bothered. It seems they’d probably made their mind up as soon as they read chapter 1.

Anyway, as the song says. Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be. πŸ˜€

  1. One person might find a cover vibrant while another might think it’s too busy. Same with the inside of the book–what might be captivating to some might be boring to others. For the record, I enjoyed your book.

  2. Honey, the cover for Midnight is NOT dull! Remember, I should know, having had a cover that truly was dull and uninspiring (not to mention looking like an artichoke!), something many readers told me and even people in Waterstones! So yes, I hope people didn’t judge my book by it’s dull cover, but honey your book is as great as it’s cover, they’re a terrific fit and NOT dull at all! πŸ˜€
