SHOUT IT LOUD! SHOUT IT PROUD!

writer

I AM AN AUTHOR!!!

Sometimes being a writer can seem futile and frustrating. At times you think every word you write is fantastic and that the readers will come pouring in. At others, you feel like a twopence halfpenny hack and consider throwing it all in. Especially when you see books that cater to the lowest common denominator on the best seller list and picking up big fat film deals.

Then there’re the writers who believe in quantity, not quality and churn out stuff that would put a five-year-old to shame They’re oft repeated excuse is that the story is king and spelling, punctuation and grammar don’t matter – what a thing for a writer to say! What they really mean is that they’re too damn lazy and too damn uncommitted to their own work, to give the reader what they deserve.

That being the case, for those of us who are prepared to do so, why bother toiling to turn your creations into the best piece of work you can create. Why bother editing, rewriting and polishing until your eyes feel like they might drop out. Why bother going over and over a manuscript, until you know it by heart? Who’s gonna appreciate it – no one.

But then you have to shove aside the self-pity and whining and carry on up that steep slope that is a real writer’s lot, at least for most of us. Forget about the trash some publishers churn out and sell in their millions. Concentrate, instead, on learning your craft – and that’s what it is – a craft. If things were easy, as they seem to be for some, then they’re probably not worth doing.

Be proud, be loud and make sure your work’s worth putting your name to.
