Do you have what it takes…

…to be a writer?

To the uninitiated, writing seems a doddle, just scrawling down whatever comes into your head and becoming a bestseller. Well, sometimes, very rarely, nature turns out people like that, but they are very few and far between. For most of us writing is a double edged sword. On one side the sheer thrill of creativity, on the other, the sharper side, it’s blood, sweat and tears.

Most writers are filled with self-doubt, wondering if they’ll ever make it to the level of mediocre, let alone great. It’s a tough profession to be in, more so in these days of the average being considered wonderful reads. Angst ridden vampires abound, confused, yet vulnerable, werewolves prowl our city streets.

Sameness seems to be the norm now, but can writers of other genres allow this to put them off? No, they can’t. Writing, like a lot of other things in life, is subject to trends and one day it’ll come full circle and horizons will open up to allow an influx of new and fresh ideas.

Roll on that day.

  1. Though it’s hard to break into the established, vampire-saturated market, the brave new world of self-publishing is expanding horizons.

Very thought provoking post, Kate. I’d be interested in reading an extended version. Your literary stamina sees no bounds it seems.
