askdavid.com – 2 new reviews for Land of Midnight Days

Two new reviews for Land of Midnight Days, from book promotional site:askdavid.com

Great fantasy

This book surprised me, I wasn’t sure if I would like a dystopian fantasy but I needn’t have worried! It is fast paced and full of exciting action, the characters are very believable and the descriptions are good.

Ms. Jack keeps you wanting more from start to finish, a real page turner! I am looking forward to the next instalment to find out what else she has in store for Jeremiah Tully and his friends. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Better than a dream

The excellence of Land of Midnight Days by Katrina Jack is, for one, measured by its ability to capture and hold my interest in a genre I tend to avoid. Typically, I choose well-grounded historical fiction, but this work of Urban Fantasy did attract me and once I began–once Jeremiah commenced playing his flute–I was entranced.

During the intervals between my reading sessions, and long after I’d finished it, images stayed with me, as if I had dreamt it all, as if I’d visited the Land of Oz and lived to tell the tale.

As a YA story, I also found that the messages therein may equip young readers to more effectively face life today, life in a world that is getting stranger by the minute

How do you hook your reader?

Well it all depends on the story, doesn’t it? Romance, adventure, historical, factual or fiction – they all need a beginning that’ll entice the reader to read on.

Books usually have some form of “blurb” or synopsis, which is intended to give prospective readers an idea what the contents are, so it’s important that this “promise” lives up to expectations.

My “blurb” promises a fast paced exciting read:

What would you do if your life was filled with fear? Hide, run away – or would you fight back?

This indicates that the story is one of adversity, conflict and hardship. It also indicates its urban setting and is intended to give the reader the chance to decide if they wish to open the book and see if it lives up to its promise.

Above is an extract from chapter one and as you can see, as a reader, you’ll hit the ground running, thus living up to the blurb’s promise that this book will not just pull you in, but will so immerse you in the story, you won’t have time to catch your breath.

The intention, of course, is to sweep the reader along. To make them feel as if they’re there, in the dystopian world I’ve created and to emphasize with the main protagonist in his determination to survive bigotry, hardship and ultimately overcome adversity; in other words not just to survive, but to live. After all, that’s what life is all about, isn’t it – to experience it as a participant and not just as a spectator.

blog

My online friend, J C Rutledge, writer extraordinaire, has recently started a new blog. One of his first book reviews was on Land of Midnight Days. Refreshingly honest, with sterling feedback, this review is amongst some of the top my novel has so far garnered.

So why not pop along and visit JC’s shiny new blog and see what’s on offer. :D

Dear diary…

diary 3

…the end is in sight!

My latest WIP, Through the Gloaming, is almost complete. The feeling of accomplishment is great. I’ll soon be able to concentrate on the editing and then it’s off to my publishers for their seal of approval.

This book’s been a bit of a slog, due mostly to illness and an injured shoulder, which prevented me from typing. The actual ideas, characterization and plotting have been relatively easy to deal with. My experiences writing Land of Midnight Days, have stood me in good stead. I learned a lot about the use of adverbs, adjectives and dialogue, whilst writing the first book and the wisdom, at least in my case, of plotting the story out from start to finish.

So yes, I’m feeling rather smug at the moment :D
