Killing off your darlings.

kill your darlings

“Kill your darlings” is a common piece of advice given to writers. What it means, I suppose, is that when a character has run their course, it’s time to let them go. It isn’t an easy maxim to follow, but sometimes it has to be done.

That said, in speculative fiction, it’s easy enough to bring a character “back from the dead”, but only if doing so enhances the story and not because the writer can’t bear to be parted from one of their creations.

In my latest WIP, Through the Gloaming, I’ve had to make the decision to let some of the characters go, for two reasons. First, as mentioned above, they’ve run their course. Second, I want to introduce new characters and don’t want to confuse readers with too many names and faces. So they’re gone and while I’m sad to see their departure, there’s always the chance that at least one of them will make a reappearance in the third book of The Silver flute trilogy.

So, so long and farewell, my dear friends, but life and plot move on.

Dear diary…

diary 3

…the end is in sight!

My latest WIP, Through the Gloaming, is almost complete. The feeling of accomplishment is great. I’ll soon be able to concentrate on the editing and then it’s off to my publishers for their seal of approval.

This book’s been a bit of a slog, due mostly to illness and an injured shoulder, which prevented me from typing. The actual ideas, characterization and plotting have been relatively easy to deal with. My experiences writing Land of Midnight Days, have stood me in good stead. I learned a lot about the use of adverbs, adjectives and dialogue, whilst writing the first book and the wisdom, at least in my case, of plotting the story out from start to finish.

So yes, I’m feeling rather smug at the moment :D

It’s raining books – hallelujah Part II

books 2

The rain of books is turning into a downpour. Completed chapter 32 today of Through the Gloaming and at the risk of sounding smug, I’m really pleased with it. The word count is almost at sixty thousand and I feel I’ve made real progress.

writing

As regular followers of this blog will know, Gloaming is book two in the Silver flute trilogy. It follows the main protagonist, Jeremiah Tully from Midnight, on his continuing journey to find a life beyond the misery of the city he was born in. Along with some of the original characters there are new ones to surprise, love and hate.

Wish me luck with this one, folks, even though I’ve got a good feeling about it.

What a great weekend!

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 18, 2012 by Kate Jack

Even though it’s almost over, I’ve had a great weekend. Three new chapters for my WIP, Through the Gloaming, and the great news that my completed novel, Land of Midnight Days, is due out in time for Christmas as a hardback book! Could it get any better?

So, those of you who saw my previous two posts, Fight the good fight and Can you fly? know it’s true to say never give up on your dreams. It pays to be persistent, to keep plugging away until you get what you want.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t have got this far without the encouragement and advice of friends like The Chesty Girls (+ 1 boy)’s writing group and members of the Alliance of Worldbuilders, such as Will MacMillan Jones, Sophie E Tallis, Lindsay Parsons, Ryan Holmes, not to mention Jane Dougherty and Tricia Drammeh.

There are many more, but unfortunately not enough space to mention each and every one. Thank you all for putting up with my crises of confidence and seeing me through both the good and bad times. And to all of you who read my blog and have kindly followed it, I very much appreciate your support.

Happy Sunday.

Posted in General with tags , , , , , , on August 5, 2012 by Kate Jack

It’s now 7.30 am and I’ve just completed another chapter of Through the Gloaming, the sequal to Land of Midnight Days.

Just for once the words flowed and it was easy to fill the page with words. Alas, this is not often the case. How many of you find yourself racking your brains for the right combination of descriptions and dialogue? The norm is to sit and stare at the blank page, frustrated and annoyed when the words just won’t come.

But today, for a few hours at least, inspiration was plentiful and I’ve filled my quota for this chapter. Now on to the next.

It’ll be easy, won’t it..?
