Ode to the joys of editing.

The last chapter has been written and the end of the story sealed off; now it’s time to edit. For me this is the best part of the writing process. To craft, sculpt and refine the whole, is a thing of joy and immense satisfaction. To put flesh on the bones of the story and see it truly spring to life under your fingers, as they skip and hop across the keyboard, is to feel the very essence of creativity. Is there any other feeling like it? For me the answer is no.

Bringing to fruition the second of my Silver Flute Trilogy is a great achievement, because I wasn’t sure I could keep the original characters both the same and yet have them also evolve. I was afraid that any new characters I introduced wouldn’t add to the story and help it continue its journey into the third book, but I think I’ve achieved both these things. How do I feel about that? Simply wonderful.

Dear diary,all good things…

…must come to an end, but can lead to even bigger and better things.

My book fayre has been quite successful in that new “friends” have been made, books tagged and “liked” and some even bought.  It finishes this Friday 11th January 2013:

I consider it a good start, writing wise, to the New Year and I may very well make it an annual affair – time permitting. Watch out for further events on Facebook and maybe drop by. You never know, you may find something that takes your fancy.

Dear diary…fresh start, or same old thing?

How many of us truly make a fresh start with the coming of the New Year? Oh we all make so called resolutions to mend our ways and make life better for ourselves and our families, but I’m willing to bet most of us don’t carry them out.

We return to work full of the post Christmas blues, to find train fares have soared, wages have sunk and all is doom and gloom. Resolutions fly out the door, as we try to make the best of what we’ve already got and soon become immersed in the day to day struggle of keeping our heads above water.

Well, guys and gals, maybe it’s time we stopped treading water and forged ahead towards the golden shore of achievement. Try making just one simple resolution and when that’s done, move on to the next.

I know I’m going to try.

Dear diary… a writer writes.

What is a common fault amongst authors – no matter what genre they write in? Procrastination. There are very few of us, I should imagine, that can write at a steady pace each and every day. Some, like myself, lack self-discipline, or simply don’t have the amount of time we would like to devote to our work. However, be that as it may, there really is no excuse, beyond life threatening situations or family emergencies.

Yes, we have to work or look after children, pets and so on, but every minute not spent doing these things should, in theory, be devoted to getting on with whatever work in progress we have in hand. But what do we do instead? We tell ourselves one more minute watching TV or ironing, or whatever – anything other than simply getting on with writing. Is it worth it? Hell no!

The constant nagging of your conscience, the frustration at not writing, all build up and up, but still we persist in shying away from achieving our goal of completing our word count for the day. Yet when we finally give in and settle down, the feeling of having accomplished what we set out to do is wonderful.

So I’m not waiting for New Year, I’m making a resolution right now. I will write every day, at least 2,000 words and I will stop faffing about – life’s far too short.
